History:
For the politically inclined, the first French Revolution in 1789 was essentially the beginning of the climate to which the students are involved in. Although this revolution succeeded in dethroning and executing the monarchy, the people of France weren’t ready for the responsibility of the First French Republic. The rift between the aristocracy and the poor was the primary fault for the first revolution. And with the radical left-wing becoming paranoid about the future of their country, the end of the monarchy was not the end of terror, especially as the more moderate political party was concerned.

When Robespierre died in 1794, the Republic died with it, throwing France into yet another state of instability as far as politics went. Napoleon Bonaparte took advantage of this and took control of France, conquering other countries and leading the country itself into a state of near constant war. Once he was exiled, however, a monarchy was reinstated which angered the people that supported the First Republic.

While some argued that the French were not ready for the Republic, there were others (notably Rousseau and Voltaire) that preached along with the Enlightenment, that men were made to rule themselves. The July rebellion of 1830, which many of our students first took part in, succeeded only in the sense that it replaced one King with another.

It’s at this point that more of Courfeyrac himself is necessary to understand the student as he is in Les Amis de l’ABC. He was born to a well off family with a father referred to as M. de Courfeyrac. It can be safely assumed that Courfeyrac, when he moved out of his parent’s house and dropped the particle from his surname, became deeply upset with the living conditions in Paris. It was through his studies of Law (however terrible attention he might have paid) that he came to meet these like-minded friends. However little he had paid attention to these feelings before, he now was quickly becoming more concerned with. By discussing ideas with Enjolras and Combeferre, he quickly became far more passionate about the subject at hand. Whatever indifference he may have had before no longer existed. Third in command of Les Amis de l’ABC, he helped Combeferre and Enjolras gather the students that shared their ideals.

Courfeyrac took in Marius Pontmercy as a room mate when the latter was living in the back of a cab, and although he did not share their same ideology, he introduced him to the rest of the Amis. (Unfortunately, Pontmercy's Bonapartist views clashed greatly with the others and he was never considered a fully like minded colleague.) In 1832, with the death of General Lamarque, the June Rebellion began. This is where the boys have their most notable, and unfortunately fatal, moment. The June Rebellion did actually happen in history, but it unfortunately did not make the changes they had anticipated. Upon these barricades is where the Amis took their last stand and died for what they believed in.

Personality:
The center. Courfeyrac completes the Trifecta of students that is Enjolras, Combeferre and himself. Without one they remain off balance and he is essentially the glue for Les Amis de l’Abc, he is the social balance that Combeferre and Enjolras require. Upon appearance, Courfeyrac is a dandy. He is of the type in the 19th century that cares very much about the appearance of himself and those around him. It is possible this derived from his upbringing, for even though he dropped the particle in his name, there are some things more difficult to be rid of in a personality. Along with this, he has a particular affinity for hats, though he can rarely keep them for any period of time.

Courfeyrac is said to be an animation of youth, in Hugo’s words a “beaute du diable”. The diabolical beauty of the mind, in other words. A playfulness that could be considered childlike on some levels, a love for life that reads excited. Courfeyrac is always excited. Were he to live longer, this may have died out eventually. But as his life was cut so short, it was still a key part of his personality.

He is described as a rakish youth, the type of man to enjoy affection and flirtations. He has a deep appreciation of women and they of him. It isn’t with any ill intention that he leaves one woman for the next, and it is through his actions that the women he has loved realize this. Courfeyrac is honourable and would not casually play with someone’s heart for the fun of it. He truly adores those he spends his time with and it is only because he has such a short attention span, or perhaps too much love to give, that he leaves them. (It is also his terrible attention span that keeps him from being as applied of a student that he can be. While he can apply himself to his studies at times, he finds it far more enjoyable to live life to its fullest.)

Though despite all of these tendencies, Courfeyrac can be referenced as a paladin. A champion for the cause, and although Combeferre and Enjolras are both considered to shed light, they are little without Courfeyrac’s warmth. He is radiant. He knows when to be serious, if it is in necessity he will not play it lightly. When he met Combeferre and Enjolras, it had awakened his drive to help: to fight for people who couldn't themselves. He may not have been so passionate about it prior to meeting them, but after, he grew to care for it just as much. Courfeyrac had been given a grander meaning to his life after learning and sharing ideals with the two men and it is because of this that he's so passionate and dedicated to their cause. He may have grown up privileged, but now was the time to pay that back to the people who weren't.

Courfeyrac is true to his friends, caring for each of them deeply, and eager to help a stranger if the case may be. It was he who allowed Marius to live with him, despite his radically different political views, because he had nowhere else to go. It is this giving nature that sets him apart from those before him, and perhaps those after him.

Upon arrival, he may be skeptical. It isn't that he believes one thing stronger than the other, but he wouldn't be too entirely sure what to believe. He expected to be dead, so in his life, he will be shocked. After the shock wears away, he'll be more convinced that he's hallucinating in his last moments alive. Ultimately, however, Courfeyrac will come to accept this place for what it is. Or at least, for what they know it to be. It is especially helpful that his friends are there to help make the transition from death to life-after-death much easier.

Unfortunately, because of his demise, Courfeyrac will be suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, jumping at loud sounds and suffering crippling nightmares. While alone, he's likely to become more reserved and introspective, upset by what he remembers. However, when around others, he'll attempt to cope by making light of the situation and appearing as though none of what had happened bothered him. He's far too stubborn to let other people deal with problems of his that he could just as easily cover up with a smile, flirtatious comment and nice distraction.

That is, perhaps, what he had been doing all along in his life, why should death be any different? He may start off as a mere shadow of who he had been, which can hardly be unexpected given the events. It would only be noticeable to his friends (and those who are excellent at reading hidden emotions) that he is trying, and eventually failing miserably, to cope with all of this on his own. Because of the stress, he's likely to be more prone to breakdowns.

In a sense, Courfeyrac’s personality could have been summed up as plainly as Hugo himself had, with a note of “for Courfeyrac, see Tholomyes”. Then, after, a list the few differences the men possessed. Which would have saved this writer from a headache of pulling together the several paragraphs above if it were acceptable.

Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations: Courfeyrac is a human and thusly has all the limitations of a human being. He does, however, have a very keen eye for fashion. That, in itself, could be considered an ability. But more than that, Courfeyrac’s ability lies in the sense that he is hard to dislike. His kind and giving nature could also be considered an ability. Truly, anything worth noting otherwise is that he fences and it can be assumed he’s decent at it.

His major downfall is by far his tendency to lose his focus quickly. His terrible attention span could eventually land him in a world of trouble, but for the moment it could be seen as endearing in a sense. He’s more of the mind, also, to act first and think later. While this doesn’t get him into too much trouble currently, seeing as he’s more inclined to stay away from fights, it is a more headstrong approach than the other two commanders display and could prove troublesome in the future.

Inventory:
1 cane
1 very nice top hat that he will likely lose within a week
1 set of bloodied clothing (waistcoat, trousers and shirt)
1 set of clean clothing (waistcoat, trousers and shirt)
1 pair of boots

Appearance: For all intents and purposes, Courfeyrac will look like Fra Fee, who portrayed him in the film. While not the tallest, he does have a commanding presence to himself. Dark brown hair that curls naturally, nothing too long despite the trend in fashion of the time. He’s very playful and mischievous in the way he carries himself and dresses only in what he considers fashionable. For the time period, he was considered a dandy: One who took great care in how he and his friends looked. This means that he is often seen with hat and cane, a particularly fine looking waistcoat and jackets. He’s slim and not very muscular, though he would probably be able to hold his own in a fist fight (unless it was with a regular brawler).

Log Sample:
Panic was the first reaction he had. Courfeyrac wasn’t sure how else to react, really. First he woke up with a tube in his throat. Then, after climbing out in his confusion, he’d found his way into the strangest, plainest looking room he’d ever seen...

And now there’s a number on his arm. A brand. His eyebrows furrowed and perhaps his first thought should not have been about how terribly this was going to clash or throw off any of his outfits. Nor should his second thought have been worry about what clothing he would find here. A hat was necessary, a proper waistcoat nearly as important. The third thought to cross his mind, actually, was the most appropriate for this situation.

Was this what death was like? A number branded on your skin (to which he’s already looking for the matching locker) that made him feel more like a prisoner than anything else. It took him a moment to find his locker, a moment longer to figure out how to open it, and perhaps a quiet, very undignified squeal of delight as soon as he saw his beloved hat (hadn’t he lost that to a canon fire?) in there. Hat, cane, a few waistcoats....

And some device. His brow furrowed again as he stared at it, having never seen something like this before. It took him several moments of pressing and turning and shaking it before he found the button that told him what to do. So, of course, he stared at it a few moments longer. Had this thing just talked to him? It was all he could do not to drop it (though he was rarely one to overreact) and to actually take its advice... That could wait until he was washed and clothed, however. It would be terrible, even in the afterlife, to be anything less than presentable.

Perhaps his friends would be here. Perhaps he’d see them again.

Comms Sample:
[There’s a moment of silence as the feed turns on. Courfeyrac’s brows are furrowed as he turns the object over in his hands, and when he speaks, the video is facing away from him.]

Bonsoir?

[There’s a small sound when he realizes that it should be facing the other way and he quickly turns it back around to face him, his sheepish grin somehow still rather charming.]

Ah, there we are. Yes... I am looking for my friends. I’m sure you hear that quite a bit, don’t you? [He laughs, eyes twinkling with amusement despite his worse-for-wear appearance.] Les Amis de l’ABC. Or perhaps Enjolras and Combeferre?
