[Had he known there was a twinge of panic, he would have felt for it, and tried to soothe it. As he did not, he simply moved ahead.]

...Do you find that I act very much younger, than you? Than-- anyone, really? Combeferre, or Enjolras?

[He let two names hang unsaid, the better to seem inconspicuous and as off-the-cuff as was possible.]

And... if so, has it caused a burden? With my getting lost, and whatever else it is I do; do you collectively feel a need to look after me, for fear I could not do so myself?

[The question is quiet, somber.]

You say pretty, and generous things, and you compare me amiably, and you are trying to comfort me, I can see. I don't doubt your honesty; for you speak wisely, and what you say is so. But... while it is kind, it does not answer my question, per say.

[Knowing that Courfeyrac was coaxing him, he did peer up when their foreheads met, and offered what of a smile that he could.]

In Paris, you know; I learned on my own, but did not go to a regular school like yourselves. I wrote, and that brought income, but I had a stipend and not a job, as the rest of you largely did. I kept no mistresses, in the way you all seemed to support some such another life, or lives. Is it no childish? I wonder, is all. Combeferre's worries were proven justified, dress or no, and even you-- you only began to stay here because you worried for me, isn't it so?

So I ask you, in your own opinion; do I seem childish, to you? Everyone has their moments, as you say, and I don't ask that. I am asking if you think I am a little bit... deficient, or incapable, as compared to the rest of you?

[He asked this evenly, honestly wanting to know, not in any preparation to be offended. But that alone really, truly bothered him in what Bahorel had said, and moreover had been really, truly bothering him since boarding here; and especially since meeting Eponine. That they were all a bit naive was clear; but did it equate to being kiddish?]

Forgive me for pressing.

[He took that in, thought it over a moment, then gave a careful nod. It was a fair answer, and Courfeyrac's thinking so did help. Which, perhaps it was childish in an of itself to rely on the opinion of others; but that he did not make a habit of, and would not chide himself for. It was helpful to know how someone else felt, to get out of his own mind, and Reynaud rightly pointed out was a habit of his.]

Thank you, petit chou. Then that is all.

[To seal it, he pressed a kiss to his jaw.]

Well! I am not so unlike Enjolras in form; he is as spoiled as I, though twice as loathe to admit it. He can take care of any number of things, but I do believe without yourself and Combeferre, his own health would turn to something wasted-- you are right.

[He laughed, finally, nose wrinkling.]

Ah, but he is a hearty child, at that.

Well starving, I do understand. Your Marius was in the habit of it also. You do take in the hungry ones, cher. But falling asleep whilst walking?

[It earns another laugh.]

That's so nearly a talent! Perhaps he was asleep while he orated to us, at times?

[Smiling, he closed his eyes.]

Well, I am perhaps not the only one who doubts me. But I suppose I have seen Combeferre do a fair number of suspicious things of late to be able to remind myself, with your kind formula.

[He opened an eye and nudged his nose into his cheek, trying not to laugh.]

Would you? I am scandalized! Do not tell Combeferre, he may take offense, in all his maturity, worn tight as a corset under a waistcoat.

No! I was misled, in my deep-set childish naiveté.

[He smirked against his neck and shut his eyes again, chuckling.]

But he assured me, recently even, that your maturity very much threatens to grow and overtake his own. His garters were all aflutter with such a fate.

[And he's not usually so indecent, no; but it's Courfeyrac. And even if he's blushing, he's also biting his lip to keep from laughing; and that feels a bit better than the mood of a moment ago.]

Were you in danger of being snatched by him? Fiend. I should do absolute battle for your honour before I would allow it. You'd have to lend me a glove, however, to start the duel. And it would be a duel of paper cuts, I fear-- deadliest of all, cher.

[The kiss makes him twinkle, in addition to that laughing comment, and for a moment after he just stares before giving a light laugh and reaching up to cup Courfeyrac's cheek briefly.

Jehan was far beyond caring about the social norms of affection; such is the plight of a poet!; and caught by a fleeting but powerful sentiment, he said bluntly,]

You, cher, are so precious.

[He did not mean as a little dog might be, or a tea cup. Instead, that his worth as countless.

He had never felt so unsorted, and low, only to be raised so easily by a person as this. Well... a living person. Books and ideas did sometimes hold the same exciting effect.]

Incorrigible, to affect your friend's garters insomuch as you do; but very precious, all the same.

Thank you.
